The lord of the rings: the fellowship of the ring mengisahkan tentang sebuah tempat yang bernama shire. Di tempat inilah menjadi tempat tinggal dari banyak hobbit. Salah satunya adalah bilbo baggins. Seorang hobbit yang terkenal karena telah melakukan berbagai perjalanan serta petualangan yang menakjubkan. Suatu kali, bilbo harus meninggalkan shire dan memberikan sebuah cincin kepada frodo baggins, keponakannya. Bilbo baggins mengatakan kepada frodo bahwa cincin itu adalah hasil ketika ia melakukan petualangan yang berbahaya sekaligus tidak terlupakan.
Tanpa tahu apa-apa, frodo baggins menerima cincin tersebut. Sedangkan pamannya pergi tanpa tahu entah kemana. Bertahun-tahun kemudian, dunia tengah diambang perang yang dahsyat. Hal tersebut tidak lepas karena kekuatan jahat dan gelap mulai bangkit untuk menyelimuti dunia. Kekuatan gelap tersebut berasal dari sosok sauron yang selama ini dianggap sudah dikalahkan namun ternyata bangkit kembali untuk menuntut balas.
Dan kebangkitan sauron akan sempurna apabila ia bisa bersatu kembali dengan cincin miliknya. Sehingga apabila itu terjadi maka sudah dipastikan tidak ada satupun orang yang bisa menghentikan langkah sauron dan dunia pasti akan hancur.
Gandalf, seorang penyihir baik hati kemudian mencari tentang keberadaan cincin tersebut. Ia mengetahui bahwa cincin itu berada di tangan seorang hobbit bernama bilbo baggins. Namun ternyata bilbo baggins menghilang begitu saja dan memberikan cincin tersebut kepada keponakannya yaitu frodo baggins. Gandalf kemudian menceritakan kepada frodo baggins tentang asal-usul cincin tersebut dan betapa mengerikan kekuatan yang dimiliki oleh cincin tersebut. Apalagi bila cincin tersebut sampai di tangan sauron maka sudah dipastikan dunia akan diselimuti kegelapan.
Hanya ada satu cara untuk menghentikan kegelapan tersebut yaitu menghancurkan cincin tersebut. Karena apabila cincin tersebut berhasil dimusnahkan maka sauron dapat dikalahkan. Namun cincin tersebut hanya bisa dimusnahkan oleh lava gunung yang sangat jauh. Gandalf kemudian memerintahkan frodo baggins dan ketiga temannya yang lain untuk membawa cincin tersebut untuk dimusnahkan di gunung tersebut.
Bukan perjalanan yang mudah karena sauron memerintahkan pasukannya untuk mencari cincin tersebut. Para hobbit tersebut melakukan sebuah perjalanan berbahaya untuk bisa menyelamatkan dunia dari kekuatan kegelapan. The lord of the rings: the fellowship of the ring adalah film pertama dari trilogi the lord of the rings yang merupakan adaptasi novel karya j. R. R. Tolkien.
