SINOPSIS
The lord of the rings: the return of the king mengisahkan kembali perjuangan para pembawa cincin untuk bisa menghancurkan cincin yang memiliki kekuatan gelap tersebut. Sam dan frodo yang sudah terpisah dari rombongan, terus melakukan perjalanan ke gunung mordor. Hanya disanalah, cincin tersebut bisa dihancurkan. Mereka masih mendapatkan bantuan dari makhluk aneh yang bernama gollum.
Gollum berjanji bahwa akan membawa mereka sampai ke gunung mordor. Namun sam tidak pernah sepenuhnya percaya dengan kebaikan hati dari gollum. Sam yang tahu bahwa gollum pernah merasakan kekuatan dari cincin yang mereka bawa tentunya ingin kembali mendapatkan cincin tersebut. Bahkan sam menduga, gollum tengah mencari kesempatan yang tepat untuk kemudian membunuh mereka berdua dan merebut cincin tersebut.
Hal tersebutlah yang membuat sam terus mengawasi gerak-gerik yang dilakukan oleh gollum. Sedangkan frodo malah percaya sepenuhnya kepada gollum. Dia percaya bahwa gollum akan membawa mereka ke gunung mordor dengan selamat seperti janjinya. Bahkan frodo menganggap ketidakpercayaan sam terhadap gollum terlalu berlebihan.
Perbedaan pendapat tersebutlah yang sering kali membuat mereka berdua terlibat dalam pertengkaran. Dan gollum yang licik memanfaatkan hal tersebut. Perlahan, dia memengaruhi frodo bahwa sam sudah tidak setia lagi kepadanya sebagai seorang sahabat. Lalu, gollum juga mengatakan kepada frodo bahwa sam berniat untuk merebut cincin yang ia bawa demi kepentingannya sendiri.
Terpengaruh oleh kalimat dari gollum sekaligus kekuatan gelap dari cincin tersebut membuat frodo tidak bisa berpikir jernih lagi. Ia mengamini apa yang dikatakan oleh gollum. Frodo dan sam kemudian terlibat dalam pertengkaran yang hebat. Hingga akhirnya, sam memutuskan untuk tidak ikut lagi dalam perjalanan membawa cincin tersebut ke gunung mordor. Dia memutuskan untuk kembali ke shire dan menganggap frodo sudah begitu dikuasai kekuatan gelap dari cincin tersebut.
Frodo kemudian melanjutkan perjalanan hanya bersama gollum. Gollum langsung memanfaatkan hal tersebut dengan menjebak frodo masuk ke dalam sebuah sarang laba-laba raksasa.
Sedangkan di sisi lain, gandalf dan para elf terus menghadapi kekuatan mengerikan milik sauron. Perang besar yang menentukan nasib dunia sudah tidak bisa dihindari lagi. Antara kekuatan kebaikan melawan kekuatan kejahatan. Dan siapa yang menang sangat ditentukan oleh cincin yang dibawa oleh frodo. Karena apabila cincin berhasil dihancurkan maka kebaikan akan menang namun apabila cincin itu tidak hancur maka sudah dipastikan dunia akan diliputi oleh kegelapan.
